Het Witte Kruis (the white cross)

This smiling woman, pointing at a traffic signal, is telling us that The White Cross "stops all pain".  The "Het Witte Kruis" (The White Cross) organization, the largest independent ambulance company in the Netherlands, was founded in 1875 by members of the Medical Council of North Holland as the first "cross organization" (kruisvereniging) in the Netherlands.  The original goal of the organization was to fight epidemics (like cholera and tuberculosis) by improving hygiene and providing home nursing.  In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, it was crucial in professionalizing nursing by starting its own training programs.
