Le Rire, a weekly satirical magazine from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, was often racy or suggestive. Many themes were covered, including politics, class, sex and social issues of the day, perhaps comparable to today's late night talk shows. The illustrations, by many well-known poster artists, often used the graceful lines and colouration typical of the Ärt Nouveau era.
This illustration, "Le grand chic moderne: l'élevage au chalumeau." (The great modern chic:: torch breeding.) aims to disparage the privileged bourgeoisie set.
