Between 25 May and 25 November 1937, when the 'winds of war' were swirling through Europe, the Paris Exhibition, formally known as the Exposition Internationale des Arts et Techniques dans la Vie Moderneoz took place. It has been suggested that, in highlighting modern technology and industrial design, it marked the end of the Art Deco geometric aesthetic. Yet it is remembered most for its political connotations. A stark contrast was seen between the pavilions of Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union, where the two buildings served as monumental propaganda tools for their respective regimes. Their rivalry was evident. Russia’s pavilion “Worker and Collective Farm Woman” pointed brazenly toward the German pavilion, which was intentionally built 10 meters higher than the Russian and topped with an eagle, wings spread.
This original poster, designed to advertise the upcoming event, bears the tax stamps issued to prove that the advertisement tax, mandatory for posters displayed in public areas, was paid. On a background of vibrant blue, grey and reddish pink it shows the Eiffel Tower, located just across from the Trocadéro, where the event was to be held.
