In 1962, artist Marc Chagall, was commissioned by French Minister of Culture André Malraux, to paint a new ceiling for the Paris Opera (Palais Garnier).  Chagall’s dreamlike style has been described as one of the earliest expressions of psychic experience, embracing images of musicians, flowers and lovers, often floating within the image, ethereal in their charm, woven together with gestures of love, symbols of hope and assertions of trauma.

Unveiled  September 23, 1964, Chargall’s painting was not universally accepted, criticised by some as sacrilege because it did not conform to the traditional 19th century opulence of the building.  However, the ceiling remains the same today as it first appeared in 1964.
Commissioned by The Office of French Tourism, this interpretive lithograph, supervised by Chargall himself, depicts one of the 14 panes from the ceiling; his interpretation of Berlioz’s symphonie dramatique: Romeo & Juliet.
