Vanity Smurf (original French name Schtroumpf Coquet) is one of the main characters of the Smurf comic books.
These books were created by the Belgian cartoonist Peyo (pen name of Pierre Culliford) and first introduced in October 1958. The original name and the language came during a meal Peyo was having with his friend André Franquin. Peyo couldn't remember the word for "salt", so he asked Franquin (in French) to pass the schtroumpf. Franquin complied saying "Here's the Schtroumpf — when you are done schtroumpfing, schtroumpf it back.". The rest of that weekend they continued speaking in schtroumpf language. Later The name was changed to Smurf.
