These Japanese macaques reside just a short stroll from Alexderplatz in Berlin.  Their home is the 160 hectare Tierpark Zoo, Europe’s largest animal park.

Following the division of Berlin into Eastern and Western sectors, Berlin's original Zoological Garden were situated in the Western sector of the city. The GDR wanted to establish a rival zoo of equal standing for the enjoyment of the people of the East.  Hence Tierpark Berlin arose.  Set in 160 hectares of beautiful parkland surrounding the historic Friedrichsfelde manor it brought (and still brings) the animals of the world to the East German people.
