In 1970 French golf enthusiast Gaetan DÁlgue set out to raise the image of the sport in France by creating a new championship trophy.  Initially named "Tournament of Champions" it was staged in Saint-Nom-la-Bretèche.  The following year it was re-named "Trophée Lancôme", in honor of the company that backed the Tournament. Originally the tournament was played over three rounds (54 holes), but from 1972 onwards it was played over four rounds (72 holes).

The 1988 Tournament (advertised here) was won by Seve Ballesteros
